The 2009 season for the Varsity Soccer Eagles was a great season. The team started out strong with wins against West Plains (9-0), Joplin (2-1 ot), and Greenwood (2-1 pks). We lost two tough ones early to Kickapoo (4-3 2nd ot) and then to Carthage (1-0) in the semifinals of our tournament. The Eagles would respond well in beating Webb City (5-0) in the third place game of the tournament and then winning the next three games against Lebanon (10-0), Neosho (6-2), and Webb City (6-0). After the great start we were up and down the rest of the year, going 1-6 over the next seven games. We had tough losses to Waynesville (4-2), Ozark (3-2), Parkview (3-1), Columbia Rockbridge (1-0), Parkview (3-2), and Pattonville (3-2). The one bright spot during that time was a 2-0 win over Willard. The team would get things back on track and finish the season on a 6-3 run. Beating Bolivar (4-0 and a final four team in class 2), Carthage (1-0 district 12 champion), and Marshfield (8-0) in one week was a great accomplishment. We ended the season with losses to Glendale (1-0 pks and 3-0), Catholic (1-4 a final four team in class 1), and wins over Hillcrest (9-0), Branson (3-2), and Parkview (1-0). Of our 11 losses we lost 7 of those by just one goal. Our overall record in 1 goal games was 5-7 and this is one aspect that we need to improve upon next year.

There were many positives this season. We tied the record for most wins (14), we had the most shutouts in a season (11), we tied the record for least times shutout (4), the team had the most goals (80) and points (216) in a season. We beat Parkview for only the second time ever and we beat Joplin for the first time. Even though we took second place in the conference we have the best overall conference record (10-2) these two years that we have been a conference sport. There are always things to improve upon but the number one need for this team is to work on our team chemistry. The players come from many different backgrounds so we need to build up the team in the off-season.

The program was blessed to have five great guys and their families apart of it for four years. We will miss Nathan Massey (3 year letterman), Matt Overby (1 year), Tanner Pesek (2 years), Kaleb Romero (4 years ), and Micah Wyssmann (3 Years). We wish all the seniors and their families the very best in the future.

The JV had a great year as well ending the year with a 10-6-1 record. They had wins against West Plains (6-0), Lebanon (4-0), Neosho (7-0), Webb City (4-1), Waynesville (2-1), Ozark (2-1), Parkview (2-1), Bolivar (3-0), Hillcrest (8-0), and Branson (5-0). The losses were to Kickapoo (2-0), Joplin (2-0), Carthage (1-0 and 2-0), Ozark (1-2), and Glendale (1-2) with the tie coming against Willard (1-1). The team scored 46 goals and only allowed 16 goals which are both great numbers for a season. The team is the third best team in Nixa JV soccer history (win % = .625). We are looking for big things in the future from these players.

The future looks bright for the Nixa Eagles. We have a lot of quality players coming back next year but to be the best we have to work hard. It’s been said that champions are made in the off-season and I truly believe that. The players need to make a point to be at the off-season workouts starting Tuesday January 5th. We will work out on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2:45-4pm. The team needs to get bigger, stronger and faster as well as get more experience and work on their technical skills. We have a great thing brewing here at Nixa and this year was a positive step toward becoming one of the elite programs in southwest Missouri. Have a great off-season.

Coach Palmer
